About John Watson

John Watson began work as a volunteer at the Merlin Theatre in Sheffield in 1969.

He is a member of the Association of Lighting Designers which is a professional body representing lighting designers in the UK .

A brief synopsis of his work includes:

  • Theatre volunteer at the Merlin Theatre in Sheffield (1969-70)
  • Stage electrician at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield (1971)
  • Birmingham Repertory Theatre (1971-73)
  • Goetheanum Switzerland (1973-75)
  • Emerson stage group – Edinburgh Festival (1975-77)
  • Technical Manager Merlin Theatre Sheffield (1978-1993)
  • Eurythmeum Stuttgart, Germany – America/European tours (1977-85)
  • London Stage Group home and America tours (1978-80)
  • West Midlands stage eurythmy tours England (1996-2011)

These eurythmy and drama performances have taken place in theatres ranging from humble stages to large opera stages across half of the globe. From the massive opera house stages of America, Canada,  South Africa and Europe to the small school stages at Wynstones school in Gloucestershire and Michael House School in Derbyshire.

More recently he has also created an innovative new set and lighting designed for the verse “The Foundation Stone Meditation” which has been choreographed in eurythmy,  using nothing more than layers of massive silk curtains for a set and a lighting rig comprised mainly of LEDs (Easter 2006 – July 2010).

He has also been responsible for refurbishing a number of venues in Great Britain. Most installations included Lighting, sound, curtains, blackout blinds   These include:

  • The Merlin Theatre in Sheffield (where he was co-worker and technical manager for 14 years).
  • Steiner House Theatre London in the 1980s.
  • Botton Village Joan of Arc Hall North Yorkshire in the 1990s and once again in 2006.
  • St Christopher’s School in Bristol in the 1990s.
  • Michael House School in Derbyshire in the 1990s.
  • Pennine Camphill Community in the 1990s.
  • Glasshouse small studio in Stourbridge in 2003.
  • Camphill Phoenix Theatre Aberdeen  2012
  • Theatre consultant Robert Gordon College Aberdeen 2014-15
  • lighting designer for numerous shows during the last 30 years.

Since 1994 he has been the director of Creative Lighting Design.

He has also been the theatre consultant for the Joan of Arc Community Hall in the Camphill village in Botton, North Yorkshire which was designed by the Camphill Architects. This project won the Royal Institute Of British Architects White Rose Award.

He is the consultant for all the theatre aspects for the Steiner Academy’s new hall Hereford (2010).

This included advising on stage lighting, sound, stage curtains, retractable raked seating, auditorium lighting, communications and blackout blinds. The Steiner Academy is the first state funded Rudolf Steiner School in Great Britain.

He is also the consultant for the New Phoenix Theatre Project in Camphill Newton Dee as well as the refurbishment of the Wirksworth Town Hall in Derbyshire.
